SLJ - Teaser - Arts Day 1

This is a SLJ Teaser. I chose to do activity one for day one. I had to make a profile page for Lorde. Here is the one that I made. I hope you enjoy.

SLJ, Practise Activity: Special Meals.

This bonus activity is about your favourite food. What is my favourite food? After I find that out I will put a picture in. Out of savoury foods, my favourite food would be Hash Browns. I like Hash Browns because the taste and texture is appealing to me. Out of sweet foods, I like my mums Apply Crumble. She uses cornflakes which makes a nice crunch and cinnamon, which gives a nice taste. It of course has apples as well.

What's Under the Sea?

This week, my reading group and also another reading group in my class were to do a digital activity on everything we learnt about Under The Sea, and things surrounding that topic.
Things I learnt.
I learnt that humans have only mapped 3% of the sea floor! The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean. It is around the Mariana Islands. In the Mariana Trench there are some amazing animals, such as: The Dumbo Octopus, Blind/No Eyed Shrimp and the Barrleye Fish, Now, the dumbo Octopus is called that because it's tentacles look like Dumbo's ears. Did you know, there are things underwater like volcanoes? They are called Black Smokers. This is because when they "erupt" they spew out hot black gas. These Black Smokers help some creatures under the water live, like the Blind/No eyed shrimp, because they like to hang around the heat. Did you know, you could put Mt. Everest in the Mariana Trench and there would still be two Kilometres left at the bottom. This is because the Mariana Trench is eleven Kilometres deep and Mt. Everest is nine Kilometres. Did you know, that the water pressure down that deep would crush everything in your body and you'd die instantly? You can only survive down there with a specially made watercraft.
Now, this is my infographic that I have made on all this information.

Rot Ya Teeth!

For a few weeks now, our class has been doing Science. We've been learning about "Fair-testing". Fair-testing is where you have an experiment and when you fair-test it, you're keeping everything fair, keep it equal. But then we did Variables. A Variable is something you change or you vary. Our group (Mikaela, Felix and I) and every group had to make six variables up.

Our group was doing the experiment "Rot Ya Teeth". We used egg shells as teeth and got different types of fizzy drink: Cola, No sugar Cola, Lemonade, No Sugar Lemonade.

But before we made the experiment, we had to had to make 3 things we could measure of the end result. Out of the things we could measure, we chose how rotten/dark the egg shell had gotten in colour. Out of our six variables, we chose to change the types of drinks.

After we started our experiment, we left our cups of eggs in fizzy up in the windowsill for a week. When we got them down after the week we made a science board. Every group had to make one about they're experiments. We had to put all the information in, graphs or diagrams, all the variables and measurements. It took days, but on the day of the science fair, our group finished, and our board looks great.

The results were, cola was the most rot and dark in colour. The next was cola no sugar. Then lemonade, then lemonade no sugar. But lemonade no sugar's drink in the cup turned pee yellow, for some reason I don't know of. The cola's drinks went kinda milky and lost some colour. Lemonade stayed the same.

But before all that, we started small. Miss Wilton gave us little containers and we got to choose our groups. We put water in the containers then went outside and put different amounts of Barroca into the containers. That was when we learnt what a fair-test was. After that we did blood splatter. Miss Wilton made fake blood, and we measured it on the same surface. But we measured how big the splat was using the same amount of blood but from different distances, the different distances was the variable. Then we learnt how to graph our fair-tests. This was all so fun, but then we got into our own experiments, which all the information is in these other paragraphs.

Here are the photos of our science board.

My Mihi! Play and enjoy!

This week, as it is Maori Language Week, Our class was doing our Mihi's on a game called Gamefroot. It gave us a tutorial for a Mihi. It's kind of like coding, but because we had a tutorial, you don't have to do much/any coding, unless your doing the script. Anyway, this is my Mihi. Play it, and enjoy.

Infographic About Wind.

This week, we have been learning about wind and how it works. We had to make an infographic about wind. An infographic is something you make that can involve, pictures, diagrams, symbols, flow charts, numbers and letters to explain something in a fun way.

Wind is air. Hot air and cold air actually. So, when you get hot air, it'll come down for awhile and then rise again, because hot air is less dense than cold air. When the hot air rises it empties a space for the cold air to come. And the cold air will stay because it is more dense. This forms a cycle and makes wind. Then you get sea breezes and land breezes. A sea breeze is: The land will heat up more easily than the sea, so the air will get hot on the land, the the hot air rises. That makes a space for the air off of the sea, that is a sea breeze. It's like a cooling fan on a hot day at the beach. A land breeze is the complete opposite. Land breeze will happen at night. So, the land cools faster than the sea, so when the hot air rises from the sea, the cold air from the land will replace it. That's my understanding of wind.
WALT: Think critically when looking at the information in the texts.
Here is my infographic, for a bit I didn't know what to do, so it's not exactly perfect. (You may have to zoom in).

What would you choose? Classic Coke or Coke No Sugar? Read this to find out why you should choose Coke No Sugar!

WALT: I can write a shorter persuasive Post by making a claim and backing it up with reasons.
This week and part of last week, our class had a different teacher in. She was wanting us to do Persuasive writing on any topic we wanted, or a sight that Mrs. Sutherland sent to us. We all were supposed to write two. Here's my second one, I like it better.

Should we drink normal Coca Cola or should we drink the No Sugar version?

I think that the No Sugar version is the best option here. First of all, a small bottle - 600 ml - that you would get out of a public fridge is just over 2 calories. Whereas Classic Coca Cola has 258 calories.

Normal coke isn’t BAD for you, except for the sugar. It has an alarming amount of sugar, and if you drink a lot it could contribute to something to give you a disease. But the sweeteners in No Sugar Coke - acesulfame potassium & aspartame - are considered good for you (if you don’t have huge doses of aspartame).

Aspartame consists of Methanol which is wood alcohol, This turns into formaldehyde at high temperatures. Formaldehyde is flammable and toxic gas with a strong smell. It is also a Neurotoxin that can affect the Nervous System and the Brain. (Information put into my own words, but I got it from Srividya Bhaskara on Quora).

In a classic Coke, there are 16 teaspoons in 600ml. But, as it says in the name, there are none in the No sugar version.

If you like the taste of classic Coke, it’s practically the same in coke no sugar. It just doesn’t have the after taste. In Diet coke, it tastes far off of the classic taste that we all love. It is pretty good for you though. Anyway, could you tell the difference between Coke Classic and No Sugar?

In conclusion, choose No Sugar Coke. It tastes the same, eats the same and smells the same. No, but if your a Coca Cola lover, choose No Sugar Coke. I assure you, you can’t taste the difference, and it’s way better for you.

Paragraph Writing!

For a couple of weeks now, our class has been learning paragraph writing. We learnt how to leak our paragraphs, like having one topic in the first and linking that topic to the next. We had a picture to base our stories on. I wrote five paragraphs, and tried my best to link them all.

Displeasure ran through his nerves as a flake from the paint on the window pain fell into his left eye. He squinted to try to get the paint flake out but it was submerged into the bottom eyelid. For a minute after that he kept his eyes closed, trying not to feel the pain from the paint flake. He remembered his wife's eyes, beautiful and blue, like the waves that crashed onto the beach on their wedding day. All he was thinking about was good memories, everything to keep his mind off the pain. When he opened his eyes again, he howled. As soon as they were open, agony shot through his whole face. He wished so hard to not be in pain, to see his wife and kids again.

He tried to remember their names, Lucy and Kit. Kit was probably at the basketball game that he paid to go to himself; Shouting “Go Team!”, because he didn’t know the names of the teams. Soon, he couldn’t feel pain anymore. Not in his eye anyway, in his heart, he still could. He was so used to the pain already, the physical pain, that he didn’t notice his eye was watering. Not from crying or missing his family, but from irritation in his eye. Soon, the attention was on his nose, all he could smell was musk and rotting wood.
His eyes were closed for long enough and he was tired enough to just…

When he awoke, he didn’t know the time of day. He could taste the toothpaste from nights ago in his mouth. It was a faint taste, but still there. He smacked his tongue up and down in his mouth to keep the taste going, anything was better than mud and rotten wood. He suddenly got a confused look on his face. His position changed, must have moved in his sleep, which wasn’t like him because he is a still sleeper, he didn’t use to be, but he had to adapt to that life because of his wife, there couldn’t be two dancers, so he gave her the stage.

Now, all he could think about was his wife; nothing else. He remembered her short curly brown hair. She used to streak it with blonde, which always looked amazing on her. Her short cut pencil skirt and pink blouse that she wore to the office every day, with maroon-ish purple lipstick, sometimes Lucy would steal and make a “masterpiece” out of it. One time, after Lucy put on her mothers' bright pink lipstick, we took her out with a kite and went to the park on the corner. It wasn’t a great park, it had a set of swings, a seesaw, and a slide. She loved it though. Her kite had a little monsters face, orange, yellow, teal and green. The main color was blue, but it had accents of the others. He would say “Luc, go get your twin! We’re going out.” He would say that because Lucy was a little monster; when she would be down, he would say “Your my beautiful, strong, brave, cute, loving and caring little monster, now go to bed and get some sleep.”
He loved having those talks with her, stroking her blonde hair that she never brushed. She had the same eyes as her mum though, bright blue with a hint of green.  He would stare into her eyes, seeing his wife in her. Lucy was going to grow up a strong and independent woman, just like her mum.

Kit looked much different from Luc and Emerson. When Kit was little, he would sit in front of the TV watching Teletubbies. His favorite was Laa-Laa, and he would always dress up as Laa-Laa for Halloween. Well, not exactly. When he dressed as Laa-Laa, he would dress green; just like Dipsy. But he would think he was Laa-Laa. and Emerson would quietly with her Husband.

What I learnt this week: Maths.

This week at school I learnt how to do something like: 3/7 of 63 = 27. How do you work this out?
Divide 7 by 63: 63 ÷ 7 = 9.
Your answer is nine. Now, times your answer by the numerator.
Times 9 by 3: 9 x 3 = 27.
That's your answer. 27. Now, another.
5/6 of 42 = 35. Like last time, how many 6's go into 42. We all know that's 7. Another way you could work that out is: 6 x _ = 42. That's 7.
After you work that out, times your answer by the numerator
Times 7 by 5. 7 x 5 = 35. There's your answer.

Blessing Cards!

During last week and this week, I have learnt about Blessing Cards, and making three. We chose a blessing from the Old Testament, a blessing from the New Testament, and a blessing from the Many Lands. So, we were supposed to make three obviously. One for our parents/family, one for a friend, and one for ourselves.

We had to make them appealing to the eye and have the blessings on, and make them fit into the card. We were allowed to do it on paper or on our devices, I did mine on the device.  I really liked how we were creating them from scratch on our own. Maybe next time, it would be cool to make them to whoever we want. But yeah, I liked this activity. It was fun.

Here it is, Hope you enjoy.

Causes & Effects of Poverty.

Over a few weeks, our class have been writing about "Causes & Effects of Poverty" in a certain Country. We had to write about: Climate, Population, Economics & Politics. My writing is about South Africa.

Causes & Effects of Poverty in South Africa.

Did you know, out of the 56.72 million people living in South Africa - More than 30.4 Million people live on $75 per month? That means 26.32 million people in South Africa are over the poverty line. That’s fewer people than the people that are in poverty. That was since 2011. Crazy.

Population in South Africa is increasing. You see, South Africa has very high birth rates. 1.1 Million babies are born each year. Due to this, people need more resources in order to survive, but they are struggling to get as many resources. This is partly because of the Climate.
There is not much money for the amount of people in South Africa.

In South Africa, their weather/climate is actually very predictable. They have humid days and bitter nights. They don’t find much water and have to walk far and wide for it.  So that means, limited Drinking Water, Washing Water, Water For Growing Crops, Cooking... you see, all these things need water and they have very finite amounts of it.

Apparently, Human Rights in South Africa are protected by the “Supreme Law Of The Republic Of South Africa” (constitution).  This sets out the “rights” and “duties” for South Africa. And it defines the structure of the government. All though, education is alright for most of the kids in South Africa. All South Africans have a right to basic education and the Bill of Rights obliges the government to progressively make education available and accessible through reasonable measures. Some get school, some don’t. It all comes down to money, and a lot of families don’t have the money for the kids to go to school. But that's what it’s like for kids all over the world isn’t it?

Lauren.

Pink Shirt Day!

WALT: Write about Pink Shirt Day and what it means to you.

This week on the 17th of May, Our School celebrated "Pink Shirt Day"! 🎔

Pink Shirt Day is about "recognising bullying".  As someone who has been bullied before, I like that we can recognise the victims and encourage people to not bully.
"Be A Buddy, Not A Bully"
Pink Shirt Day started when in 2007 two students protected a boy who was wearing a pink shirt and got bullied and predicted to be homophobic.

Don't Bully!

My Mother xx

WALT: This week we have been doing "Character Descriptions" on our Mother or a close female in our lives. First we had to do "Physical Description", "Behaviour" Then "Environment & Belongings".
I did mine about my Mother. Enjoy.

My Mother

Hmm, let me think. My mother… Stunning.
Her eyes shine even when it’s a dull day. Her smile is brighter than the sun. She always has the same smell, flowers. In my opinion, she doesn't need perfume, because her aroma is blooming on it’s on. Her attire fits her perfectly, but she has these unsightly green jeans. That doesn’t matter, because one day, I’ll burn them.
You know I wouldn't do that mum!

Even though she's fifty-one, she looks twenty-five; and, she has a magical voice that puts me to sleep every night. Dad was a genius to marry someone like her!
You know what? Mum don't need no "Happy Pills". She's already joyful and unbelievable without them. Her sense of humour is better than mine, (gold medal for her!).

My mum effects people in a marvellous way. She will change someone's day with a smile or a joke. She surely changes my day with a smile and a hug. She would never use a rude word against someone. (At least not to their face!)

She likes to keep everything tidy. She’ll nag at me until I clean my room. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. When I'm making dinner, she makes me clean all the dishes before we serve, I think it's unfair. But you're the former chef here so I don't care. You'll always kill a spider for me, even when it'd be tiny, and if you're too scared to do it, you'll improvise and get Dad.
You will never know just how beautiful you are to me.
And with that mum, you're my hero!

Pig The Pug, Character Descriptions.

Pig the Pug.

Pig The Pug is a pug. He is very chunky and funky, he has folds all over him. His eyes stick out to the side of his head. It's hard for Pig to smile because his face is all droopy. He has floppy ears and has brownish red eyes that make him look evil. His figure is cute, but not when you look closer...

Pig The Pug is a vindictive dog who is always stealing the limelight. Pig never lets Trevor do anything, this causes Pig to get hurt when he tries to overcome Trevor but doesn't succeed. His behaviour is a sort of rude and cheeky type. There is toxic steam that always comes off him. Pig has everyone wrapped around his finger, but not Trevor. He likes all the attention and doesn’t want anyone to share it with him. Pig always has this thought in his head: “I am the best, no one is better than ME!”

Pig makes people feel used, manipulated, and grief-stricken.
Trevor always thinks to himself: “Pig is my brother, I would never make him blue, even if he makes me feel blue. I can’t just bluntly be rude to him.”
Trevor feels manipulated, even though his brother is uncivil to Trevor.
Pigs owners/parents have been deceived, they think Pig is a little Angel, but Pig has made them think that by being nice to everyone around them and taking the spotlight. Trevor wishes they saw the truth between Pig and Trevor's abusive relationship. Everyone has been fooled by Pigs behaviour around everyone.
Pig is making people doubt themselves in every way. His behaviour is appalling!

Pig would ALWAYS have his furniture glossed. He would always have his toys in his chest by his bed. He would always have his expensive colognes in alphabetical order. He was like a little Prince. He even had a Tiara on his bedside table to show how amazing he was. His bed was one sheet only, no wrinkles, no bumps. It had to be perfect, every side had to be the exact same length. Everything in his room is pristine white. Everything is painted with a creamy white, a greyish white or a bright white. Nothing is out of order, if something moves, he'll have a panic attack. Pigs lawyers call him O.C.D, it's true though.

Famine and Drought. South Sudan. Newspaper Article

WALT: Create a Newspaper Article.

Me and Nevaeh have been working on South Sudan and their Crisis. They're in drought and famine and we don't want that to happen anymore! Me and Nevaeh have created a Newspaper article on the drought and famine to inform people about it.

Thursday 4 April 2019

This week I have been reading a book called "Little Bro". It's about a big brother who is fixing his bike and then the little brother steals his bike patches to put on the wheel. The little brother was running away, then the big brother locked him outside and ate all the ice blocks. Then the little brother was pulling faces at the big brother through the window, and the big brother got so mad, he launched toward the window and broke it. They had to make an excuse for it. I made a poster on how to deal with siblings.

Fatal Accident!

Fatal Accident!
On the twenty-fourth of march 2019,
Pig the selfish pug fell out of a window.
Pig’s brother, Trevor wanted to play with Pigs toys,
but Pig wouldn’t share.
Is that the truth though… Or is it lies.
Trevor's Statement:
“My brother kept piling on the toys.
Piling and piling. He climbed onto the top and bowed.
Then, the Tower of Toys swung this way, and swung that way.
Next thing I know he was out the window! I tried to warn him,
I really did. But he fell and his body was turned inside out”.
Pigs Statement:
“H-he pushed me.” Pig whimpered.
“He stuck his claw out and tapped it on one of my toys,
it’s HIS fault I’m like this!”

Who do we believe and who don’t we believe.
Reporter,
Kelly-Anne is going to interview Joyce McHale and Greg McHale,
the parents of Pig and Trevor.
Their statements:
“We were shocked and terrified when we found out t
hat Pig had fallen and had been broken inside and out.
But Trevor wouldn’t do that, surely! He’s the nicest dog ever.
I don’t know how to explain it. Me and Greg were at work.
All we know is as much as you guys.” Joyce finished speaking.
Greg didn’t want to say anything.

Until the police found out more, the case is closed!

G r ë ë n

G r ë ë n
I could feel them staring at me. I didn’t want to look at it, so I peered down into the water.
‘Becky’ I heard a voice say, ‘Rebecca!’. It was my friend Isla.
‘What, Isla?’
‘I’ve looked all over town for you, where have you been, are you okay, what’s wrong?’.
‘Isla, I’m fine. I just needed somewhere serene to clear my head…’
‘Okay Becks, why is everyone looking at you?’
‘I know as much as you darling.’
‘Okay bye’
‘Bye..’ I murmured.

Isla… understood me. I needed to clear my head daily, and she was so understanding of it.

See, my dad died a few months ago, and after my dad died my brother went mute.
When I went to clear my head, I would go somewhere serene and well… green.
It was such a relaxing colour, but wherever I went, someone was always looking at me. Two eyes peering, and I didn’t know why…
Maybe it was because I was always in the paper? The headings would be “Daughter of dead father seen again by a stream and a bridge!”
I hated when that happened.
I was as clueless as a kite without a person holding it.

The water was so slowly moving, the wind making the leaves on the tree’s dance. There were trees surrounding everything. It felt normal now to do it, and because it was a daily thing, I could know where I was going, I knew what to do. Just stand there and listen to the trees shuffling against each other. I didn’t even have to look, I just had to listen to find my happy place.

It wasn’t that green was my favourite colour, even though it is now. The places you go to that make you feel good, might be green, you never know…
