Kia Ora!
For the past few weeks in English with Miss Birch, we have been planning and then writing about our influential leaders, and why/how they are influential. I chose Jacinda Ardern, here is my writing! Enjoy.
Is Jacinda an influential leader? What makes her an influential leader? Let me tell you. But before I explain,
did you know that she had been counted the most popular leader of ten years? Jacinda is an inspiring leader.
She has made a huge impact and influence on New Zealand’s thinking.
Now, you may be wondering “what makes Jacinda an amazing leader?” Well, maybe it’s because she acted
swiftly when the Covid-19 outbreak happened, and her work was effective. Communicating the thinking
behind those actions to New Zealand's five million citizens. Maybe it’s because she's taken a 20% wage cut,
a gesture of solidarity with the many who lost their jobs throughout the lockdown. Jacinda had strong
leadership in the pandemic, which led to schools and restaurants reopening on May 14th.
That is an example of how hard she worked and how hard New Zealand worked to save New Zealand
from the pandemic
On March 15th 2019 New Zealand experienced a dreadful terrorist attack directed at the Muslim community,
in which 51-52 people lost their lives. Jacinda quickly made the gun laws tighter. After that she gave these
moving words which made New Zealand's thinking more positive. “They are us. New Zealand has been
chosen because it was safe, because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion, and home for those who
share our values. Refuge for those who need it.”
Jacinda has been vocal and passionate about climate change too. She has a desire to save the planet.
“We’re small, and our contribution to the global emissions profile is even smaller, but we are surrounded by
island nations who will feed the brunt of climate change acutely.” Jacinda said off New Zealand’s role in the
global battle against the climate crisis. “I see ourselves as having a responsibility to demonstrate that we can
and we will lead the change.” In 2018, Jacinda set out her plan to ban single use plastic bags throughout the
country, with retailers facing fines of $65,000 if they failed to do so. Jacinda has done this because she
received so many letters from school children about the issue that she had to act on it.
Jacinda inspires. She carries her difficult personal life with having a child, and a difficult work life being the
Prime Minister of New Zealand. Yet she still manages to do justice and bring New Zealand peace.
She’s accustomed to breaking glass ceilings, as she is only the third female Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Jacinda will go down in history for all of her efforts as a Prime Minister.
